Globose tangles, like neurofibrillary tangles, are accumulations of tau in neuronal cytoplasm, but unlike those flame-shaped structures, the globose variety are more or less rounded. It is unknown if this reflects a different aggregation state of tau or if it is a simple consequence of the original morphology of the affected neuron. Globose tangles are characteristic of PSP, where they are found in the cortex, hippocampus, and midbrain tectum. The image below was obtained from the midbrain of a PSP case stained with the Tau-1 antibody and counterstained with hematoxylin. Four globose tangles are shown, with one being out of focus.
